The objective of this assignment was to answer the question “What is Art” with a poster design.

With this project, I took time to really tune into how creating art makes me feel on a deeper level. As I reflected on my own creative process, one idea kept coming back to me: art is freedom. That phrase became the foundation of my concept.

To express the freedom—and even the quiet rebellion—that art can represent, I chose to depict hands breaking out of chains. This imagery symbolizes the release that happens when we create, as if art allows us to break away from expectations, limitations, and anything that tries to hold us back.

Behind the hands, I incorporated famous artworks. These pieces aren’t just there for visual context; they serve as a reminder that the artists who created them likely felt the same sense of liberation that I experience when I make art. Their paintings became their escape, their voice, and their way of claiming space in the world.

By combining these elements, my project shows that art isn’t just something we make—it’s a personal act of freedom. When I create, I feel unrestrained, expressive, and fully myself, and I imagine the artists of the past felt a similar release in their own work.
